FIVE GO "INTERNATIONALE" IN GERMANY!

ANTI-RACISM TOUNAMENT IN HAMBURG Easter 2004

On the Easter weekend we set out for the first ever Cowgirls international tournament in Hamburg, hosted by your friends and mine the St Pauli Fanladen. We arrived at the tournament site bright and early on a beautiful sunny morning of Good Friday and set about the serious business of shopping at the St Pauli stall. Our other concern, as it was a six-aside tournament (and we woz only five,) was to headhunt some footballing talent worthy of the Cowgirls name. After only a little grovelling and bribery we managed to recruit some players from Republica, St Pauli Women's and St Pauli girls teams, earning us the honorary title of Easton Cowgirls Internationale.

The games began on Friday when we played the other 5 women's teams. I'm sorry to have to mention that WE WOZ ROBBED of a winning goal in one match due to Sue's impeccable manners vis a vis NOT mentioning that the ball had gone over their goal line (there were no refs). Rumour has it that she apologised for upsetting their goalie. (Note to Andy and Steve; any chance of assertiveness training?)

On Sunday the games continued with the women's and men's tournaments merging for the play offs. Sally and Jess were so impressive on the pitch that they were headhunted themselves by St Pauli Girls' team. Inspired by the singing of the Republica supporters, not to mention shamed by Sally's efforts at sideline encouragement of, "Unlucky... try again... in a bit," we spent many happy moments compiling a repertoire of Cowgirls supporters' songs, including a personal song for every Cowgirl. (You have been warned.) In between games we set up a table in the sunshine and displayed our C.Gs T-shirts. Within moments we were mobbed by screaming fans (I swear this is true) who snapped them up like they were going out of fashion (as if!)

The tournament was won by those nice young men from Republica and we finished in the very respectable position of NOTLAST. Despite our gruelling training schedule we managed a modest amount of partying; Jess completely refuting her worry that she "won't be able to keep up with our drinking" (obviously has learned the importance of hydration to us athletes) and Mel displaying a previously hidden talent in Northern Soul Stylee footwork on the dancefloor.

Special thanks to Sue and Katrin for organising us, St Pauli Fanladen for a truly ace weekend and all our honorary Cowgirls including Marisella, who spoke for us all when, wearing her 'on grass' T shirt, she told us, "I'm very proud to be a Cowgirl today."
